Mama Killa

2022, Mixed Media Installation, Dimensions variable

The Ledger, Bentonville, AR

Utilizing industrial materials including static climbing rope and neon acrylic panels, this work merges the colors and forms the Peruvian landscape, Inca mythology and religion with western domestic decorative references as an exploration of contemporary gendered power inequity. In this work the Inca moon goddess, Mama Killa (the Hispanicized spelling of the Quechua Mama Quilla) is appealed to as the goddess of menstrual cycles and defender of women. The tassel hooks take inspiration from the Oncidium Orchid, also called the “dancing lady”, one of 425 species of orchids found within the Peruvian Andes Mountain range and the tassels themselves reference the Inca khipu (pronounced key-poo), a system of intricate knotted cords for recording numbers. The title is a reference to lyrics from the 1977 song Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads.
