Trapped
06/2009
This temporary installation whimsically suggests a comparison between the history of the first white settlers in Spokane who were trappers in the fur trade and the current credit crisis, referencing the boom and bust cycle for each. The installation consists of three human-scaled (4’x7’) traps located on the floor of the Spokane Transit Authority Pavilion. Each trap is ornately decorated with Victorian Baroque gilding, referencing past economic and esthetic opulence, and contains a sound element hidden in the central trigger of the trap. The gilding as well as the large red velvet pad with a doily upon which the traps rest, act to align the traps with precious domestic objects, while simultaneously retaining the ominous nature of their ultimate function.
